What I Heard in the Ben Milam Neighborhood

The Ben Milam area is one of the most welcoming parts of District 1. Over a recent round of block walking on Anita, Hazel, Hickory, Mockingbird, Pecan, and Rosedale, I visited 102 homes, had 49 real conversations, installed 28 yard signs, and covered 6 streets. Here is what neighbors told me.
Safer streets and parks
Many residents, especially on Hickory and near the park, want more consistent police patrols and safer park spaces at night. One Hickory resident told me, "The cops show up after a call, stay a week or two, then disappear." Neighbors are not asking for a one-time response. They want a steady presence.
Fix neighborhood roads, not just main roads
Potholes, street repairs, drainage, traffic noise, and the medians came up on street after street. An Anita resident said it best: "Fix roads in the neighborhood, not just main roads." That is the core of my approach to infrastructure. Neighborhood streets deserve the same attention as the big corridors.
Lighting and walking safety
Dark streets and broken street lights were a common concern, along with safer walking routes near schools. "The street is very dark," one Pecan resident told me. Near Anson Jones Elementary, parents described heavy traffic during school hours and the need for safe crossings. "School traffic in the mornings is tough, and we need lights working," said another Pecan neighbor.
A City Hall that listens, in English and Spanish
Several residents shared frustration with permitting, code enforcement, and communication with the city. Some also raised the need for Spanish-language support. One Pecan resident told me, "I felt ignored at City Hall when speaking Spanish." No one in Bryan should feel that way. Every resident deserves to be heard.
Pride in Ben Milam
For all the concerns, the pride in this neighborhood was unmistakable. People described Ben Milam as quiet, close-knit, and a great place to raise a family, with neighbors who look out for each other. Longtime families have deep roots here. As one Mockingbird resident told me simply, "I grew up in this house."
What comes next
Here are the ideas and follow-up items I am taking from these conversations:
- More consistent park patrols and public safety
- Repairs to neighborhood streets and drainage
- Better street lighting
- Solutions for speeding and traffic near schools
- A review of medians and emergency access
- Better City Hall communication and Spanish-language support
Thank you to every neighbor who opened the door and shared their time. If you live in District 1 and have something on your mind, I want to hear it. Join the campaign or request a yard sign.
