"You're the First One That's Ever Come Knocked"

From September 17 to 28, I walked Ben Milam, Palasota, Hickory, Mockingbird, Hazel, and Pecan and knocked on 118 doors. Along the way, I met at least five residents who have lived in their homes for more than 50 years, including two who have been there more than 70.
One moment stuck with me. Roman Grimaldo, a 15-year Palasota resident, opened his door and told me, "You're the first one that's ever come knocked on this door and actually talked." Roman is now proudly endorsing our campaign, and his words are a big reason I keep walking. Our neighborhoods deserve a council member who shows up.
Meet Fidela Gonzalez
Fidela and Mario Gonzalez have lived in their Palasota home since 1969. They raised their children there, and they have no plans to leave. "This is our home since we came," Fidela told me.
Fidela taught at Ben Milam for 20 years and is a longtime member of Emmanuel Church. She shared her concerns about flooding and drainage since nearby development, and how it has affected her home. I am honored that Fidela is proudly endorsing our campaign.
What neighbors are worried about
- Traffic and speeding, especially when children walk to and from school
- More police presence and faster response times
- Drainage and flooding since nearby development
- Street lights, loose dogs, and rising rents and taxes while the neighborhood feels overlooked
Growth should never come at the expense of the families who have built these neighborhoods. When new development goes in, drainage and infrastructure have to keep up.
What they love
There is a lot to love here, too. People answered the door and talked. Neighbors appreciate the sidewalks, the rebuilt road, and the roundabout. Many said the neighborhood feels quieter and safer than it used to, with families outside. And so many people have stayed for 15, 20, 27, and almost 60 years and still call it home.
That kind of commitment deserves a council member who is just as committed to them. Thank you to Fidela, Roman, and every neighbor who took the time to talk. Join the campaign and help me keep knocking.
